(Michael Heenan\/CBC)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some property owners in Saint Andrews are speaking out against a plan to refurbish the Market Wharf, although the design was&nbsp;chosen by the public in a community vote.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The wharf, long overdue for repairs, is central to both tourism and industry in the area. Two years ago, the town voted on a design they felt would best reinforce the existing structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But property owners near the wharf are fearful the chosen design may cause damage to their own properties and are awaiting the results of a study to assess the environmental impact of the project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"adContainer-F11hw in-read-double-NumGh\">\n<div class=\"ad-in-read-double ad-detail \" data-cy=\"in-read-double\" data-testid=\"ads-in-read-double\">\n<div id=\"in-read-double-707234\" class=\"advertisement in-read-double\" data-google-query-id=\"CKD2xp--g48DFSiPWgUdpnMVqA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5876\/news\/canada\/newbrunswick\/story_2__container__\">Cindy Kohler lives just a few coastal properties away from the wharf and is concerned about erosion and sediment damage from the refurbishment.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><p><em><strong>WATCH | &#8216;There&#8217;s pros and cons on both sides,&#8217; acting mayor says:<\/strong><\/em><\/p><div class=\"player-placeholder-ui-container player-6a4a1fc5-a468-4d53-b061-05740ca92f67 \" data-cy=\"player-placeholder-ui-container\"><div class=\"player-placeholder-video-ui\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Chosen by public vote, this Market Wharf plan angers Saint Andrews property owners \" role=\"button\">\n<div class=\"player-placeholder-ui\">\n<div class=\"video-item video-card-overlay\" title=\"Chosen by public vote, this Market Wharf plan angers Saint Andrews property owners \">\n<div class=\"thumbnail-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/d7cdca03-6923-4156-9384-5b5f5e614eb2,1750095501987\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C1920%2C1080%29%3BResize%3D620\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"video-card-overlay-container\">\n<div class=\"video-info-container\">\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Chosen by public vote, this Market Wharf plan angers Saint Andrews property owners<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-time-container\">\n<div class=\"videoTimeLabel\">Armourstone infill in the design could speed up erosion and cause damage from sediment, leaving coastal residents concerned about the chosen design.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really frustrating,&#8221; Kohler said. &#8220;They&#8217;re just looking into the environmental study but it&#8217;s very late in the game and it&#8217;s something that should have been done in the beginning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kohler&nbsp;is worried about the amount of infill for the wharf extensions, which will add a significant chunk of solid rock and steel on the existing mudflat.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She said severe storms cause water levels to rise significantly on her property and thinks the&nbsp;infill would only worsen flooding in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The former mayor said that we own waterfront property and we should be taking care of it in our own way, that erosion is going to happen regardless,&#8221; said Kohler. &#8220;We do have a good seawall here and we have taken care of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kohler is not alone in her concerns. Matt Abbott, the Fundy Bay Keeper with the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, said&nbsp;the concerns are legitimate and bring a whole new set of challenges to this coastal community.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;When we build hard infrastructure like infill for a wharf and we change where the energy from the tides are flowing, we can have an impact on that coast,&#8221; said Abbott. &#8220;I know they&#8217;re in a tricky situation so I think it&#8217;s wise to take some time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/saint-andrews-wharf-mudflat-fish-habitat-1.7452346\" data-contentid=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Saint Andrews may restore a Campobello mudflat to get the town&#8217;s wharf rebuilt<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The design of the refurbishment was selected using a community voting process,&nbsp;but the final decision to go ahead with this project still lies with town council.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adContainer-F11hw in-read-SPN_4\">\n<div class=\"ad-in-read ad-detail \" data-cy=\"in-read\" data-testid=\"ads-in-read\">\n<div id=\"in-read-871095\" class=\"advertisement in-read\" data-google-query-id=\"CKH2xp--g48DFSiPWgUdpnMVqA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5876\/news\/canada\/newbrunswick\/story_3__container__\">The town recently hired an engineering firm to assess the concerns of property owners.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We hope that doing this mitigation and the Gemtec&nbsp;study we will know whether or not that will impact the people who have come forward,&#8221; Akagi said. &#8220;They just need to know that holding it back, we are going to miss another tourist season which is not good for our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The town received $5.4 million from the federal and provincial governments for the refurbishment.
