Protect the Heart of St. Andrews’ Waterfront
The Town of Saint Andrews has approved a massive Market Wharf Approach Trestle Replacement and Expansion Project, but this is no simple repair. The plan calls for 4,545 square metres of rock and armour stone infill into our tidal harbour, replacing open pilings with a solid wall of stone, permanently altering tidal flow and reshaping the heart of our historic waterfront.
Promoted as a “hybrid” upgrade, the $7.8-million project will extend Market Square, but at the cost of blocking natural tidal movement, damaging marine habitat, and replacing the open, heritage-style approach with an industrial-style shoreline. Similar infill at nearby locations has already caused erosion, flooding, and debris buildup on neighbouring properties. Scientists warn that critical mudflat ecosystems, home to clams, shorebirds, and fish, cannot simply be recreated elsewhere.
This project risks:
- Environmental harm: Blocking tidal flow, altering sediment patterns, and destroying irreplaceable marine habitat.
- Loss of heritage character: Replacing open pilings with a rock wall changes the visual heart of our waterfront.
- Questionable urgency: The wharf needs repair, not a full redesign. The rush appears tied to grant deadlines, not structural necessity.
- Lack of expert input: No comprehensive, independent marine science review or long-term wharf plan has been presented.
Why This Matters
Saint Andrews is a nationally recognised destination, known for its charm, history, and pristine harbour. Once this infill is in place, the damage cannot be undone. The decision has been driven forward without full community consultation, and without transparent disclosure of alternative repair options that could preserve both function and character.
How You Can Help Stop the Infill
Time is short. Here’s how to make your voice count:
- Write to Town Council – Email the Mayor and Councillors at cspear@townofstandrews.ca stating your opposition to the current design. Ensure your letter is addressed to Mayor and Council.
- Contact Your Representatives – Reach out to provincial and federal officials who oversee infrastructure, environment, and heritage.
- Share This Information – Post the facts in community groups, talk to neighbours, and direct them here to learn more.
- Attend Council Meetings – Ask questions on the record and demand transparency.
Our Message Is Simple
Repairs are necessary—infill is not. Saint Andrews deserves a solution that protects our wharf without destroying the natural beauty, heritage character, and marine health that make our town unique. #docksnotrocks
