There are moments in a town’s history that cannot be undone. The Market Wharf infill project is one of them.
I believe every one of you has worked hard for this town. Serving in local government is not easy, and I respect that you are doing your best with the information and pressures before you. But I ask you, from the heart, to pause before making a decision that will alter St. Andrews forever.
What many residents don’t realize is the sheer scale of this infill. The plan, now out for tender, is the permanent burial of over one acre of our tidal harbour under rock, armour stone, and pavement. Once the rocks are dumped, there is no taking them back.
The Wharf is not collapsing. With proper repairs it will stand strong, giving us time to seek funding and design a solution that protects both safety and heritage. This is not our last chance. But if we move ahead now, it becomes our last choice, and your lasting legacy.
I believe you want to do right by this town. I plead with you: do not let urgency or pressure push you into an irreversible mistake. Protecting St. Andrews means protecting what makes it irreplaceable, its open shoreline, its beauty, its history.
Respectfully, but urgently, Cindy Kohler, Concerned Citizen
